The following was sent to me as an email by a friend.

“The Ant and Grasshopper”
There are two Versions - Read Both
TRADITIONAL VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold. MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!

CONTEMPORARY VERSION (Also, possibly better named the Neo-Con version) The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be WARM AND WELL-FED while others are COLD AND STARVING. CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with ! food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so’ Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper, and everybody cries when they sing, ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green.’ Jesse Jackson and Barach Obama stage a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations film the group singing, ‘We shall overcome. Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity and Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer! The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government. Hillary Clinton gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a defamation suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a panel of federal judges that Bill Clinton appointed from a list of single-parent welfare recipients. The ant loses the case. The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant’s old house, crumbles around him because he doesn’t maintain it. The ant has disappeared in the snow. The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident; and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

This was my answer to my friend:

To tell you the truth, I don’t even think it’s cute. This was sent to me in slightly different form by my arch conservative, Reagan worshiping, Bush Bush supporting neo-con cousin a couple of years ago, with only a few names different. I know you aren’t coming from the same place, but I’ll tell you what I told him.

This parable was probably written during the Reagan era. Its purpose, if you step back and look at it, is to show that liberals are whiney and want to take away the resources of comfortable conservatives and give them to the liberal poor. The poor, as the story demonstrates, are homeless and starving entirely by their own choice. They deserve their poverty because they didn’t do all those proper conservative things.

Now to the truth. Probably the majority of people on the streets any given winter night are at least high school educated. Most of them had houses and jobs and cars, and even bank accounts before their jobs were sent overseas. Others, actually a large number of the homeless are veterans of wars and skirmishes America has fought, going back in some cases to WWII. They are suffering from PTSD and can’t hold a job. But they get no help from the government that put them in harm’s way in the first place. Many soldiers are routinely dismissed from service on general discharges related to their behavior problems while in the service, without addressing the cause of those problems or allowing for their treatment by the VA.

Then there are mothers with children on the street. Was that their own fault, too’ In 2003, children under the age of 18 accounted for 39% of the homeless population; 42% of these children were under the age of five (National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, 2004).

Of course there really are some people on the street who were “grasshoppers,” more than happy to let welfare take care of them. But this unfunny little parable suggests that that is where most of the nation’s homeless come from. It just isn’t true. And it just isn’t funny.

If I seem to be ranting at you, I apologize. I just don’t think you thought of it that way before.
