About Lea Salonga:

Lea Salonga-Chien (born Maria Ligaya Carmen Imutan Salonga on February 22, 1971 in the Philippines) is a multi-awarded Filipino singer and actress who is best known for her acclaimed portrayal of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon. In the field of musical theater, she is recognized for having won the Olivier, Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics, and Theatre World Awards, the first to win various international awards for a single role. She was also the first Asian to play Eponine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway. In 2007, Salonga released her first studio album in seven years called “Inspired,” which has been certified platinum, and finished another stint in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway, this time as Fantine. She is slated to appear in a number of musical events scheduled in different countries until 2008.

Early career:

Lea Salonga started as a child star in the Philippines, making her professional debut in 1978 at the age of seven through the musical The King and I by Repertory Philippines. She became the lead star of Annie and joined other productions such as Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Fiddler On The Roof, The Rose Tattoo, The Sound of Music, The Goodbye Girl, Paper Moon, and The Fantasticks. She began her recording career at the age of ten with her first album, Small Voice, which received a gold certification. A song on the album, the duet “Happiness,” marked her first recording collaboration with her younger brother Gerard Salonga who would, years later, work with her either as musical director or creative director in her concerts and recordings. Her second album, “Lea,” was released in 1988. In addition to performing in musical theater and recordings, Salonga hosted her own musical television show, Love, Lea, and was a member of the cast of German Moreno’s teen variety show That’s Entertainment. She likewise acted in films, which included the family-oriented Tropang Bulilit, Like Father, Like Son, Ninja Kids, Captain Barbell and Pik Pak Boom. She also opened for international acts such as Menudo and Stevie Wonder in their concerts in Manila in 1985 and in 1988, respectively. As a young performer, Lea Salonga received a Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) award nomination (the Philippine equivalent of an Oscar nomination) for Best Child Actress and three wins from the Aliw (literally, “entertainment”) Awards as Best Child Performer.

International career:

Salonga’s big breakthrough came when she was selected to play Kim in the megahit musical Miss Saigon in 1989. Unable to find a strong enough Asian actress/singer in the United Kingdom, the producers scoured many countries looking for the lead role of this major British production. For her audition, the 17-year-old Salonga chose to sing Boublil and Schönberg’s “On My Own” from Les Misérables and was later asked to sing “Sun and Moon” to test her voice quality’s compatibility with the songs in the musical. The members of the panel were impressed with Salonga’s rendition of the songs, noting that from Salonga’s very first note, they already knew they had a potential Kim. Salonga competed with childhood friend and fellow Repertory Philippines performer Monique Wilson as they were tested with songs from the musical, which included “Too Much for One Heart,” a number replaced by the duet “Please” right before the musical opened. Salonga was offered the lead role, with Wilson as the alternate (who was also assigned the role of bar girl Mimi).

Janet Klein sings an Irving Berlin tune entitled, “Cohen Owes Me Ninety-seven Dollars” (1915). Lyrics shown below.

This happened at the Tin Pan Alley show during the Annual West Coast Ragtime Festival in Sacramento, California - November 2007.

Please click on the linked websites shown above to obtain more information about Janet Klein, Brad Kay and other outstanding festival performers.

I hope you can make it to the next festival!

HERE ARE THE LYRICS:

Old man Rosenthal lay sick in bed
Soon the doctor came around and said
“No use crying, the man is dying. He can’t live very long!”
“Send my son here to my side,” they heard the old man say
“I’ve got something to tell him before I pass away”
Soon his son was sitting by his bed
“What’s the matter, Papa dear’” he said
The old man said, “My son, before my days are done
I want you to know:

[chorus:]
Cohen owes me ninety-seven dollars
And it’s up to you to see that Cohen pays
I sold a lot of goods to Rosenstein and Sons
On an I.O.U. for ninety days
Levi brothers don’t get any credit
They owe me for one hundred yards of lace
If you promise me, my son, you’ll collect from ev’ry one
I can die with a smile on my face”

[2nd verse:]
Old man Rosenthal is better now
He just simply wouldn’t die somehow
He is healthy and very wealthy since he got out of bed
Such a change you never saw, he’s got such rosy cheeks
He picks up in just one week what should take weeks and weeks
Ev’ryone who knew that he was sick
Couldn’t tell how he got well so quick
They went and asked him to explain how he pulled through
Rosenthal replied:

[2nd chorus:]
Cohen owed me ninety-seven dollars
And my son went out and made poor Cohen pay
A bill was owed to me by Rosenstein and Sons
And they settled on that very day
What could my son with all that money
If I should leave it all and say goodbye’
It’s all right to pass away, but when people start to pay
That’s no time for a bus’nessman to die

This is an original song written by the dude on the left, Luke Benson. Andy and I are singing the harmony part. This is a very difficult song to sing in perfect tune and we used the first take. A little shaky but I think is still a great song.

In November 2006, one of America’s most talented and overlooked singer-songwriters, Bob Lind performed live a full-length in-studio concert for an upcoming documentary project. Bob Lind is known for his 1966 hit single “Elusive Butterfly” and other critically acclaimed folk-rock recordings from that period (produced by the legendary Jack Nitzsche). Bob is a prolific songwriter whose compositions have been recorded by over 200 hundred famous performers including Cher, Richie Havens, The Turtles, Petula Clark, Hoyt Axton, Marianne Faithful, John Otway and dozens more.

Bob stepped away from the music business in the 1980s but never stopped writing insightful and beautiful songs. The Los Angeles soundstage concert marks Bob Lind’s return to the stage after roughly two decades on hiatus and features a mix of stunning new material with many old favorites. In addition to the concert, Bob videotaped a series of in-depth interviews about his life, his career and his music. He was also captured in rehearsal and on stage at two LA-area gigs and in candid backstage footage with friends and fans. The envisioned end-product is a concert program interspersed with documentary scenes, showcasing Lind’s incredible gifts as a songwriter and performer, while giving insight to his unique personality and creative process. The producers are currently seeking distribution and interested parties are invited to contact Research Video Inc in this regard.

Catch Bob Lind live next time he’s in your neck of the woods. He’s not to be missed! Check www.boblind.com for tour/concert information and more.
