static: digital collaborations with kathak
chaos/order. pulse/silence.
static, the piece, is a sound poem exploring dimensions of sound from
ordered to non-ordered to chaos - particularly in the genre of
digital. it is contrasted with silence and the sound of the tabla - a
sophisticated east indian drum reknowned for its complex rhythmic
language.
static, the piece, is a struggle and a journey by the dancer through
the layers of response to chaos/order. it is the journey to discover
time marked/time unmarked; to discover the digital nature of pulse
-on/off, to emerge as a poet in static and silence and digital noise.
these two journeys occurr simultaneously and in response to each
other. they explore the language of kathak as a digital construction
- as the rhythms are broken down into bytes and bits –on/off, on
on/off, off –/on … and so on.
as a sound poem the piece occurrs in layers of sound and silence
emerging/ and vanishing into one another, interrupting one another and
eventually resolving into full complexity of being and/or full silence
(’). the concept of static can be explored in several ways. as the
original sound of static when a television signal disappears and we
are left with the loud electronic static of utter chaos…(’)… also
the static on the radio at frequencies without broadcast. but also
static as a notion of being stuck, repeating - as in a static or
standing wave.
sound of tabla insisting on ordered, created rhythm syllables emerges
and subsides in this chaos until gradually it is formed to completion.
also vaguely emulates/echoes the tension between digital and analog
sounds/visuals. tabla composition or vocal composition providing the
analog existance to click tracks or digital frequencies. the dancer
with bells who is capable of making only on/off sound is stretched
between the two.
